With Halloween right around the corner, I’ve been dying to start decorating inside and out!  We’ve only been in the house since April, so this is our first holiday season being able to decorate in the new space!  I ran across this idea online and knew it would be perfect to start off my project list: Free Flying Lessons Witchy Halloween Sign!  AND, we have a free cut file for you, so check out the whole project for the download link!

Supplies:

Wood board (mine measures 12″ x 24″)

Paint (I used a mixture of grays and white)

Sandpaper

Sealant (I used Minwax Polycrylic)

Adhesive vinyl (I used black Oracle 651)

Transfer tape

Silhouette cutting machine

I started this project by sanding my board to give it a nice smooth finish and cleaning all the dust off afterwards. My plan was to just paint it a light gray but it looked a little plain so I added some white and a darker shade of gray using the “drybrush” painting method. Once the paint had dried I sealed it with Minwax Polycrylic and let that dry.

I had a pretty good idea of the design I wanted to create for my sign and I knew I only needed two shapes in addition to my text. While it would be easy enough to just purchase the shapes I instead headed to Dafont.com and found exactly what I needed free of charge (whoo-hoo!). The witch came from a dingbat font KR Oh Witchy Poo and the stars were part of a font called Stars & Stripes. I simple typed the letter H and right clicked on it and selected release compound path. I was then able to separate the stars from the letter shape and duplicate them. The two fonts I decided to use for my text are Give Me Some Sugar and Wizards Magic.

Now that I have all my design elements I just needed to decide on the sizing and placement. I drew a rectangle shape the same size as my board so that I could see exactly what it was going to look like when I put it together. Since the design was bigger than my cutting mat one option is to use the knife tool and cut it into sections. It does use a bit more vinyl this way but it guarantees everything is lined up perfectly. If that’s not a big concern you can just randomly place the text and shapes on your mat and reposition them when applying to your board.

So once I cut out the vinyl, I simply transferred it over to my transfer tape (contact paper!) and lined it up with my painted board.  Give it a quick press and voila!  I sealed it with an additional coat of sealer just for good luck!

I’m so glad you like the sign. Make sure you have downloaded the font “KR Oh Witchy Poo” from dafont.com. Once you’ve downloaded and installed it you must close Silhouette Studio and open it back up. The witch shows up for either E.

What an awesome Halloween sign! I appreciate that you walked me through how to find each element of the sign if they were fonts. How clever is that?!! Thanks so much for the cut file!

This is too cool! I really appreciate the way you used gray and black instead of the typical orange & black! I like the way you painted!
